Online Policies at CCSU

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013

In Spring 2013, there were 4 from A&S, 1 from SEPS, 1 from BUS, 1 from the library, 0 from SOET, 5 Data Mining courses and 1 TLC course.   According to Paulette Lemma, the limit for the number of online courses offered in the Spring and Fall semesters is 10, excluding the online Data Mining program.  Originally, there was a strict limit on the number of online courses since they were taught through CSU system office and the tuition for those courses didn’t come back to the university.  Subsequently, there had been concerns about being able to adequately assess online learning.  There was a pilot program, but no one followed up to ask for expansion of academic year online courses.  Paulette mentioned that the grad school had conducted a survey of faculty and student satisfaction.  Faculty said that there was no obvious effect on retention, but that students participated more and discussed more in online courses.  Students liked the economic and scheduling advantages of online courses.

Brian Sommers said that A&S gets 4 of the 10 spaces.  There is an application process (Spring 2013 Application) for these slots in A&S, I don’t know about the other schools.
